All That’s Solid Melts into Wiggling Air
An Odell Organ Odyssey featuring Adam Tinkle & Special Guests

Engaged in a process of artistic research into the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall as building, institution and “instrument” throughout its once-in-a-generation renovation, musician and multidisciplinary artist Adam Tinkle has been documenting the peeling away and re-layering of the historic building, while at the same time composing adventurous musical and documentary responses to the profound questions raised by the renovation process. Now, flipping the “ON” switch on its historic 1882 Odell pipe organ for the first time since the hall’s reopening, the project turns towards an investigation the materiality and metaphors of airflow - the most fundamental of musical media - in an evening length premiere of new compositions for the “king of instruments” and assorted others.

Artist Bio:

Adam Tinkle is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, writer and teacher. Grounded in studies with luminaries of the musical avant-garde (including Anthony Braxton, Anthony Davis, Alvin Lucier, and Pauline Oliveros), his artistic work has steadily broadened in scope to embrace theatre, documentary, video, installation, and visual art. But above all, and uniting these diverse media, is a commitment to nurturing artistic community and collectivity: he founded a children’s orchestra that played hand built instruments, has formed artist-run venues, series and cooperatives, and, as a faculty member at Skidmore College, guided the vision behind its Co-creation Initiative to forge networks of support between the college and justice-centering community efforts across the Capital Region. Of late, his curatorial efforts have focused on the Picture Lock One, a micro-cinema the bank vault beneath CollarWorks in Troy, NY, and Evoked S. Potentials (ESP), a themed concert series currently based at Saratoga’s historic Frederick Allen Lodge. He has co-created films, podcasts, artist books, and stage performances that have shown internationally and that have involved collaborations with some of the major voices in contemporary culture, including Kim Stanley Robinson and Marina Abramovic. His visual art practice, which reimagines expressive uses for antique TV equipment, was featured in a 2022 solo exhibition at the Arts Center of the Capital Region, in a monumental chiming video-clock face at the inaugural Troy Glow light art festival, and in interactive video baths presented at Club SPA Spa and the 2023 Flaherty Film Seminar. A multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter and improviser, music remains his root practice; with his various groups performing dozens of shows per year. @trinkletinklesound
